Tall Ships Pass World Trade Center on American Bicentennial, 1976

Twenty years ago, the moment we knew it was terrorism, I was sure we were witnessing the end of freedom in the USA. I was half right. In that time, Republicans went fascist and insurrectionist. They became worse than Al Qaeda. Much worse, because they know better. They have literally turned against democracy and embraced a greater evil than that which attacked us.
The Libertarian Party went alt-right and is mostly crypto-fascist now. No help there.
Meanwhile, Democrats have gotten, if anything, more libertarian. That's the very good news. However, we're divided, and most can't believe how evil Republicans have gotten. That's extremely dangerous.
We are now in a situation very similar to pre-Nazi Weimar Germany, and we're losing to the fascists. If the people who love freedom and democracy do not unite against these totalitarians, my nightmare will finally come true.
Anyway, every 9/11 just gets sadder and sadder. I hate being right.
